An influential Old Testament scholar, Walter Brueggemann has examined the Hebrew prophetic tradition and argued for the Church's role in offering an alternative vision to dominant cultural narratives. His theological work emphasises imagination and social conscience.

Our feelings brought to speech are not as dangerous or as important as we imagined, as we wished, or as we feared. When they are unspoken, they loom too large, and we are condemned by them. When spoken, our intense thoughts and feelings are brought into a context in which they can be discerned differently.
