Highlights
A memoir in which the author recounts his experiences working as a diplomat in Afghanistan and other dangerous postings, examining risk and duty.
We then withdrew to the Italian section of the Tallil base. I spent some evenings with the carabinieri paratroops and the Italian Special Forces and grew to like them. They had built their own pizza ovens. Otherwise, I ate in the dining hall. Breakfast was a disappointment for a Briton – dried biscuits and a plastic-wrapped croissant. Lunch and dinner were magnificent.
